Lifts of the future, what tomorrow has in store for us

Since the creation of tools and the subsequent invention of devices, humans have sought options to make life easier in a variety of ways. Improving access and transportation has been a constant in our lives, so that we can get from one point to another faster, safer and more conveniently.

Lifts of the future, what tomorrow has in store for us

That is why over the years we have created, designed, transformed, optimised and updated devices such as lifts to make them better and better. We have not yet reached the pinnacle in this sector, so thinking about the new concept of lifts in the future, what does tomorrow hold for us?

Technological advances in lifts

Raising and lowering people and objects from various heights has been a constant in the history of mankind. While the first such devices were characterised as somewhat dangerous, this began to change around 1850, with the first safer lifts. Since then, technology has advanced further and further, creating solutions to the needs of every individual, institution or company. The elevator industry today has a number of proposals that once seemed like something out of fiction.

For example, the writer Roald Dahl mentioned in one of his books that the main character, Willy Wonka, had a lift that could move both vertically and horizontally. This is no longer a fantasy but a reality, thanks to a German company's proposal for a lift that uses magnetic levitation. This would completely change the current concept and structure of elevators, which would no longer be moved by conventional cables and the disadvantages that this could entail.

What the elevators of the future will be like

Having a lift that moves vertically and horizontally is great, but that's not all, as there is also the proposal that they can even go outside. This means that the way buildings are designed today will also change, because they will no longer be based solely on having an elevator shaft with certain characteristics. So, in a way, it also gives free rein to creativity in terms of construction and design.

In this respect, there are other innovations in the design of tomorrow's lifts, because if today the conventional thing is to press buttons to go to a certain level, this will also change. Thus, the new lifts will be biometric, i.e. they will operate by voice recognition or fingerprint, avoiding the buttons and devices that have been in use for decades. Of course, in theory, this would also increase security, as these measures would only recognise people who are registered (authorised) to be there. Or also to avoid lack of productivity, by restricting access to those who are not authorised to access certain floors.

Sustainable and comfortable lifts for the future

Energy saving and sustainability in lifts are indispensable today. The use of clean energy is also an element that must be considered in the construction of elevators, as well as their potential impact on the environment. The use of magnetism incorporated in the design technology of future lifts will be a key element to achieve this, because, in this way, energy will be saved by not requiring cables or rails, but by using magnetic levitation to move the elevators.

In terms of comfort in lifts, the biometric system will not only be more comfortable for those with restricted mobility or a disability, but also for modifying preferences in terms of temperature, humidity, type of music to listen to during the journey, etc. We could also have models equipped with reclining seats. Of course, they will be much safer and the risk of possible traffic jams or breakdowns during the journey will be practically a thing of the past.
